David McKellar
David began playing piano at the age of nine, and was introduced to brass playing through the education system, by Mr Andrew Keachie M.B.E. at the age of fourteen. By the age of sixteen David had won several schools solo championships and music festival awards playing baritone, and was also a member of Kilmarnock area schools band, conducted by Andrew Keachie, when they won three successive National youth band championships in the Royal Albert Hall.
At the age of twenty-one, while playing 1st Baritone with Kilmarnock Concert Brass, he became Scottish senior solo champion. David had a lengthy break from playing while working in London. On his return he took up the position of solo euphonium with Dalmellington Band, picking up four West of Scotland solo championship wins.
David took up his first conducting position in 2004 with Irvine and Dreghorn Brass Band and led us to 2nd place in the 2008 Scottish Championships. This achievement also meant that we qualified for the National Finals in Harrogate, earning a respectable 11th place on the day.
